Leon’s menu is carefully created to make the most of the finest of ingredients sourced from across Cumbria and the UK. Changing with the seasons, the dishes are designed to excite the palate, fusing tried and tested classical techniques with modern ingredients and the latest cooking innovations.
Along with his wife Helen, Leon is now the proud owner and head chef of The Moon Highgate. They look forward to welcoming you as you experience the amazing results of all they have learnt along the way!
Head chef and owner, Leon Whitehead, first became interested in food and cooking as a small child, when he loved to watch his parents work in their restaurant.
A family move to Africa introduced him to an even wider range of tastes and textures. His fascination with the amazing things that could be achieved by mixing the right ingredients became ever stronger. Leon continued to travel widely in Africa, as well as in Spain and France. His journeys allowed him to sample classic dishes, visit the local markets and learn how different chefs all used local produce and traditional techniques to the best effect.
Moving back to the UK, the family eventually settled in South Lakeland. Here, Leon continued to build on his food knowledge, continually pushing himself to improve his understanding of food and further his skills in cooking.
Leon has studied and worked in a wide range of restaurants and hotels, most recently as Executive Chef for the prestigious Lake District Hotels group, based at Merewood Country House Hotel.
